Mauretania Anchor Chain

Walter Denholm standing next to the anchor attachment chain for the Mauretania. The links for this chain were 5 3/4 inch diameter and together weighed 1 ton. It is known as stud link cable and is different because it has a stud filling the centre of each link to prevent it from twisting and snagging whilst raising and lowering the anchor. The section shown is the attachment between the anchor chain and the anchor itself. The chain was capable of withstanding a strain of 265 tons.

Walter Denholm was a celebrated anchorsmith at Hingley's. The main cable workshop was always referred to as the "Denholm Shop" due to the skill of him and his family.
