
Hollywood's "master of the macabre", James Whale (1889 - 1957) was born in Dudley, the son of an ironworker. Always artistic in temperament, he decided to become an actor after taking part in amateur dramatics while a POW. In 1930, his acclaimed poduction of the famous Great War play, Journeys End, was transferred to America, and then filmed. During the next decade he produced and directed 18 films. Whale's view of Mary Shelly's trafic monster Frankenstein, played by Boris Karloff, has enetered popular consciouness.
