Best known outside the Black Country for his regular pilgrimages to the top of Ben Nevis in Scotland. Son of a Methodist Minister he founded the Vicar Street Bible Class in 1925, became a probation officer in 1937 and started his regular climbs when he erected a "Peace Cairn"on the summit on VJ day in 1945.
