The Fair at the Museum

The travelling fair, like the one by St James's School, brought entertainment to people a century or so ago. It would set up on a piece of waste ground and for a few days provide a range of thrills, entertainment and a change for those who might never go on a holiday.

Fairgrounds were the first places in which most people could see moving pictures, before picture houses were built and halls used to show films. In 1921, a Black Country man from Brierley Hill, John Revill, built a small cinema on land adjacent to his house. Today the cinema has been rebuilt exactly as it was in 1926.
