School Drawings

A selection of drawings by Winifred Bennett, during 1915, whilst she attended Northfield Road School, Netherton. School subjects at this time were said to be "well arranged" whereby "a difficult subject is followed by an easier one". Arithmetic (mathematics) was always the first lesson of the day at Northfield because it was assumed that children were "fresher" and could therefore "reason better". Overall, arithmetic occupied 275 minutes of school time whereas spelling only 50 minutes. For boys, 175 minutes was given to drawing and only 55 minutes for girls. Girls and boys were separated throughout school but all children started school at 9:00am and finished at 4:30pm with a two hour lunch break!
