The Tram

The tram will take you to and from the museum entrance and the village area - a one way trip is included in your entrance fee. The Number Five tram was built in Tividale in 1920 and was used on the Dudley and Stourbridge system.

After being taken out of service in 1930, the tram was brought privately and kept at a summer house in a back garden in Bennetts Hill, about one mile from the museum. Following extensive restoration work in Wolverhampton, it was put into service at the museum in August 1980. Two similar tram bodies, rescued from Coalbrookdale, can be seen outside the depot where they are being restored.

The tramway is of narrow gauge with rails only 3ft. 6ins. apart - the more common, standard gauge, tracks were 4ft. 8.1/2 ins apart. The depot where the tram is stored also houses other vehicles, including trolleybuses which are used to carry visitors around the site. The overhead wires for the trolley buses can be seen by the terminus.
