The Spitfire Walsall II

The Spitfire Walsall II was built during the Second World War with money raised in the town and photographed on 27th June 1941. In Walsall, as in virtually every town in Britain, a number of schemes operated to encourage people to join the war effort, and the citizens of Walsall joined in wholeheartedly. They dug for victory in allotments in the Arboretum, and were very conscientious about saving their salvage and collecting for, and contributing to, National Savings campaigns. People were asked to collect items made of aluminium to provide material for use in aircraft construction. The items they donated tended to be 'tin baths' and other metallic household items.
