The thousands of boats that used to work the Black Country canals needed constant maintenance, so at one time in this area there were many boatyards or docks, like the one at the Museum, where boats were built and repaired.
The main buildings are a blacksmith's shop for making ironwork, a nail and rivet store, a paint store where the ingredients for boat paint colours were kept, a sawmill and timber store, a tackle store and a stable. Most of these buildings are made from old boat timbers. There is also a wheeled shed that can be moved up and down the length of the boat to enable work to continue in all weathers.
Boats were winched onto the dock sideways from the canal, and were re-launched sideways as well!
You are welcome to walk through the boat dock.
